A private Casablanca to Merzouga tour takes you about 700 km from the Atlantic coast to the Erg Chebbi dunes in 3 to 5 days. You travel with your own driver and guide, choose between the Middle Atlas route or the Marrakech and High Atlas route, and sleep in a desert camp.
I was born into an Amazigh family, and the road to the Sahara is the road I know best. Below I share how my team and I plan this journey: the routes, the stops worth your time, and the details most travel websites leave out.
Why start your Sahara journey in Casablanca?
Most international flights land at Mohammed V Airport, so Casablanca is often your first day in Morocco. Many travelers rush to Marrakech and only then think about the desert. Starting the tour in Casablanca saves you a transfer and a wasted day. If you are still deciding, read my guide on whether to start your Morocco trip in Marrakech or Casablanca.
We can pick you up at the airport or your hotel. If you land early, there is time to see the Hassan II Mosque, whose minaret rises above the ocean, before we head inland.
Which route should you choose from Casablanca to Merzouga?
There are two main roads from Casablanca to Merzouga. Both are beautiful. They simply show you different faces of Morocco.
| Middle Atlas route | Marrakech and High Atlas route | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | About 700 km | About 800 km |
| Driving time (no stops) | 9 to 10 hours | 11 to 12 hours |
| Key stops | Rabat or Meknes, Ifrane, Azrou cedar forest, Midelt, Ziz Valley, Erfoud | Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge |
| Landscape | Cedar forests, high plateaus, palm oases | Snow peaks in winter, kasbahs, red gorges |
| Best for | Reaching the dunes faster, nature lovers | First-time visitors who want the classic kasbah road |
My honest advice: go in by the Middle Atlas and come back through the Dades and Todra valleys to Marrakech. You see both sides of the mountains, you never drive the same road twice, and you finish in a city with excellent flight connections. If you are already in Marrakech, our private Marrakech to Merzouga 4-day tour follows the southern road in more depth.

The 3-day version works, but day one is long. If you can give the road one more day, the 4-day tour is the one I recommend most. For a slower pace, see our 6-day Merzouga desert tour from Casablanca to Fes or the full Casablanca to Merzouga in 10 days journey.
What happens when you reach Merzouga?
Erg Chebbi is a sea of orange dunes, some rising around 150 meters. You arrive in the late afternoon, leave your main luggage with us, and ride a camel into the dunes as the light turns copper.

The camp sits between the dunes. Dinner is usually a tagine, followed by drums and stories around the fire. Away from city lights, the sky is full of stars. Wake up early for sunrise from the top of a dune. It is quiet in a way that is hard to describe.

If you have a free morning, I like to take guests to two places most group tours skip:
- Khamlia, a village where Gnawa families play music rooted in West African traditions.
- Rissani, an old market town and gateway to the ancient caravan routes. Market days are busy and very real.
For background on the wider region, the Moroccan National Tourist Office has a guide to Errachidia, Midelt and Merzouga.
Private tour or shared group tour?
Shared tours usually leave from Marrakech on a fixed timetable in a full minibus. They rarely start in Casablanca. A private tour gives you:
- Your own vehicle, driver and guide, with stops whenever you want them.
- A start and end point that fit your flights.
- The choice of camp, from simple tents to a luxury desert camp with private bathrooms.
- Time to talk with a local guide about Amazigh life, language and history.
For families, couples and photographers, the freedom alone changes the trip. To compare every option, see my guide to choosing the right Merzouga desert tour.
When is the best time to go?
The most comfortable months are October to April. Days are warm and dunes are easy to walk. December and January nights in the desert can drop close to freezing, so camps provide heavy blankets. From June to August, afternoons in Merzouga often pass 40°C. Summer trips still work, but we plan driving for the early hours.

Pack layers, a scarf or turban against sand and sun, closed shoes, sunglasses, and a small overnight bag for the camp.
What shapes the cost of your tour?
No two private tours cost the same. The main factors are:
- The number of days and the final destination.
- The number of travelers sharing the vehicle.
- Your choice of hotels, riads and desert camp level.
- Extras such as a second desert night, a 4×4 dune excursion or a local guide in Fes.

It is possible on the Middle Atlas route, but it is a full day in the car. We recommend at least 3 days so you can enjoy the camp and return in comfort.
